How Do I Talk to My Stylist to Get the Hair Color I Want

One of the biggest concerns clients have when going to any salon is being able to effectively communicate with their stylist about the color they want to achieve for their hair.

If this is something you’ve experienced– whether it’s your first-time coloring or your hundredth – you are not alone. In fact, as hair coloring techniques and styles evolve, people who were once certain about their color style and preferences get anxious anew.

While many people can experience anxiety talking about their hair color goals with a professional stylist because they are concerned they are not using the right terms, some are nervous about trying something different or just don’t know what’s best for them.

How to Talk to Your Stylist About Coloring

One of the key things to start the conversation about your hair color, is to remind yourself that this is YOUR hair, YOUR color and most of all, YOUR decision. Oh, and also that nothing is truly permanent.

Your stylist’s job is to make you feel at ease and comfortable discussing the various options for your hair type and balancing that with your color goals.

While some of the best stylists can admittedly get carried away when talking about the science behind new techniques, it is so important that they are able to slow down and explain the details to you. But also, don’t be afraid to ask questions along the way. Sometimes, a stylist needs to geek out – but you can always wrangle them back to your level if industry jargon and science talk starts to run amok.

We always recommend starting any color journey with a color consult. At Hologram, we offer consults both in person at the salon as well as online for those who may be traveling from a longer distance to our salon for coloring.

Before your consult, take a few minutes to read our Glossary of Buzz Terms for Hair Color and Care. This can help you get a better picture of what you may want to try out and achieve.

Here at Hologram, we truly love talking to our clients about options, goals, and really answering any question you may have about the process – including how to best care and keep your color.

If you’ve got questions, we’ve got answers. Don’t hesitate to reach out.
