Foils or Balayage: which is right for you?

Looking to change up your color but don’t know where to start? Then the time has come for one of the most important discussions EVER: Balayage vs. Highlights.

Each technique has its own advantage – here’s what you should know:

Let’s Start with Balayage:

Also known as “hair painting,” balayage is a hair coloring technique where a color is hand-painted on portions of hair. The effects of balayage is to create a more effortlessly natural, well-blended look to your color. And before you let pop-culture ruin you – no, balayage is not just for blondes. It’s a great process for brunettes too – from caramels to espressos and really anything in between.

Balayage gives your hairstylist a little more freedom of expression when “painting” your hair to achieve that natural – dare we say, low maintenance – look.

The great thing about balayage is that it doesn't create a big scene the way traditional highlights do when the color grows out, it’s meant to continue that well-blended look as it grows.

What About Foils?

Foiling is the process of sectioning the hair off before applying the lightening solution. These sections can be thicker or thinner, depending on the exact look you’re trying to achieve. Once the product is applied, your stylist will bend the hair into foils for processing. Stylists use foils for both highlights and lowlights.

Foiling allows the hair-dye product to infiltrate deeper and helps keep the treated hair separate from untreated hair. When the process if over, it leads to a more intense, bolder color look. Foils usually need to be reapplied every 6-8 weeks

Now, you may find yourself asking your stylist about balayage to achieve that sun-kissed look, and they may recommend foils as the better way to achieve it for your particular hair.  Don’t fret – when you have the right stylist, they have your back. And your hair, for that matter. They’ll know all the tricks and methodologies best suited for the look you want to achieve while maintaining the health of your hair for the long haul.
